2020 01 19 Schackbrädor – Chess board

Making a chess board from walnut and oak benchtops! Not having all the fancy mashinery you “need” made it more difficult and lowered quality somewhat.
First try did not finish very straight. Had a second go with a higher quality finish.
(All video text in swedish!)
I got the idea from other you-tubers. The reason though, is that in 1997 as we were moving, my old chess board made of alabaster broke. It was high time to get a new board! I aimed for a larger board within the regulatory sizes according to European/US chess standards.

I used what in swedish is called solid pole-glued countertop of oak and walnut. I put boiled linseed oil mixed with balsamic turpentine on top. Mixture was 50/50. Las coat was with pure boiled linseed oil. Also I used fish glue.

Next time I would use pure wood and not pole-glued, because the “poles” do not correspond to the chess square size. Also I would search for ash wood, not oak, to get a even lighter color.

Thanks to Martin and his home made cutting table! Much straighter!
